Nitrogen nodules

After harvesting the last of my broad beans, the haulms were cut off and composted, leaving the roots behind. The reason for leaving the roots in the soil is that most peas and beans (legumes) store nitrogen as nodules on their roots. These nodules are clearly seen in the pictures above and provide nitrogen for the following crop, which in my case is swede and kale.

Hello PW and Piglette - I must let you know how informative I find your blog - those little nuggets and hints and tips are all really useful!
I'm watching your purple peas with interest - were the flowers purple to? and are the peas? and even if you are saving the seed, I presume you will be doing a 'taste test'?

Thanks Hazel, the flowers are indeed purple but alas the peas are green. A taste test was undertaken last year on a plot neighbours ones and they were very tender and sweet.
